Sun hats for big heads
If most hats sit on top of your head like a bottle cap, you're not alone. A lot of shops stop at L, around 59 cm (23¼ in). Our hemp sun hats go up to XL/XXL, for heads up to 64 cm (25⅛ in), and the bucket hat goes up to XL at 64 cm too. Here's how to find one that actually fits.
- Measure your headWrap a soft tape measure around your head about ½ in above your ears and eyebrows.
- Check the numberOver 61.5 cm (24¼ in)? You want XL/XXL in our sun hats, or XL in the bucket hat.
- Size up if in doubtBetween two sizes? Take the bigger one. A hat that sits a little loose is fine in the sun; a tight one gives you a headache.
- Pick your shapeFrayed brim for the garden and festivals, the foldable hat for travel, the bucket hat for wind and water.

| Hat | Biggest size | Fits heads up to |
|---|---|---|
| Frayed hemp sun hat | XL/XXL | 64 cm (25⅛ in) |
| Foldable hemp sun hat | XL/XXL | 64 cm (25⅛ in) |
| Hemp bucket hat | XL (XL/XXL) | 64 cm (25¼ in) |
Why is it so hard to find a hat for a big head?
Most hats are made in S to L, because that's where most heads are. Anything above about 60 cm is treated as a special size, and many shops simply don't carry it. Our sun hats come in XL/XXL as a regular size, not a special order.
What about long or thick hair?
Measure over your hair the way you'll wear it. If you wear it up or it's very thick, add a centimetre or go one size up. One customer wrote that the XL foldable hat "works great with long bulky hair".
Will the brim look small on me?
No. The brim grows with the size: about 6 cm (2⅜ in) on M and about 7 cm (2¾ in) on XL/XXL, so the proportions stay right. On the frayed hat a wire is sewn into the edge, so you can shape the brim lower at the front or wider at the sides.
What do customers with big heads say?
It fit my large head perfectly. It's cooler in the sun than any hat I've ever owned.T., Etsy review
Measure first, then pick XL/XXL if you're over 61.5 cm (24¼ in).
