Our story

Handmade in Kathmandu since 2010

manaKAmana is a small clothing brand for independent thinkers who like their clothes made by hand. We design hemp hats, Thai fisherman pants, ponchos, bags and wool knits, and our tailors and artisans in Kathmandu, Nepal, make every piece.

Who we are

Hi, I'm Jenia

I started manaKAmana in 2010, with our Etsy shop. Since then we've sent more than 14,000 orders to people all over the world, most of them in the US.

From the start I wanted clothes with no gender or age distinction: wrap waists, wired brims and loose cuts that adjust to the body instead of the other way round. My designs are a fusion of ancient Eastern culture and contemporary Western clothing, and I use natural fibres, hemp, cotton and wool, because I believe our skin is thankful for them.

manaKAmana was created for people who share the idea of mindful living. Recognising that we are all connected on this planet is the first step to sustainable thinking and acting. A peaceful mind comes from a healthy environment.

How a piece is made

From a sketch to Kathmandu to your door

Every piece starts as a drawing and a paper pattern. Then it goes to Kathmandu, where our tailors and artisans make it with the textile skills of their own culture: hemp fabric sewn into sun hats with a double-layer wired brim, Gheri cotton handwoven into ponchos, macramé knotted by hand, wool knitted and crocheted.

Everyone who makes a manaKAmana piece is a skilled craftsperson, paid fair wages and working in safe conditions. We've worked with many of the same people for years. Finished pieces ship to the US, so orders arrive quickly, most of them with Amazon Prime.

Giving back

Kathmandu is more than where we work

I'm inspired by people and cultures from all over the world, and grateful for the projects and workshops we do with individuals and communities in Kathmandu. We've supported HOPE Nepal, a home for orphaned children in Kathmandu, who thanked us with a letter of appreciation. I believe in cross-cultural exchange, and in peace and friendship all over the world.

It looks exactly like the picture! It fit my large head perfectly. It's cooler in the sun than any hat I've ever owned. Plus I got compliments the first two days I wore it.

Quality construction here: tested on beach, kept head cool and hugs head well. XL size works great with long bulky hair, bendable rim is a great plus to conform to wind resistance.

Better hat than I expected, shipped very quickly, and when I asked about care instructions, they replied within hours. What more could you ask?
