How to tie Thai fisherman pants
Thai fisherman pants have no zip, no buttons and no elastic. The waist is a wide panel of fabric, 51.2 in (130 cm) around on ours, that you fold across your body and tie with a cotton belt. It looks confusing the first time and takes about ten seconds once you've done it twice. Here's how.
- Step in and hold the waist openStep into the pants and pull the wide waist up to your belly button. Hold it open in front of you with both hands.
- Fold one side to the middleTake one side of the waist and pull it across to the centre of your stomach, so it sits flat against you.
- Fold the other side over itBring the other side across on top. The waist is now wrapped snugly around you, with the extra fabric folded in front.
- Tie the belt at the frontTake the two cotton ties round your waist and tie them at the front.
- Pull the knot snugTighten the knot until the pants feel secure but not tight. A double knot holds for a whole day.
- Fold the top downFold the top of the waist down over the ties, like a cuff. This hides the knot and keeps everything in place.

Why do Thai fisherman pants tie instead of using elastic?
Because one pair then fits a lot of different bodies. The waist adjusts as far as you need, and nothing presses into your stomach when you sit cross-legged, eat a big lunch or sleep on a long flight. It's also simpler to make and lasts longer: there's no elastic to lose its stretch.
How do I keep them from slipping down?
Wrap the waist tighter before you tie, so there's less loose fabric, and use a double knot. Folding the top down over the ties (step 6) also locks the knot in place. If they still slip, you probably need a smaller wrap: fold more fabric over in steps 2 and 3.
Which length should I choose?
Ours come in Regular, 38 in (97 cm) from the waistband down, and Extra Long, 40 in (102 cm). If you're tall or like them to pool a little at the ankle, take Extra Long. The leg opening is 22 in (56 cm) on both.
Can I wear them inside out or back to front?
The waist works either way, but the pants have a front and a back. If the seat feels baggy in front, turn them round.
